Itzpapalotl, or “Obsidian Butterfly,” represents the Tzitzimime, or entities which served several benevolent and malevolent functions. It was not uncommon for well-known icons to be depicted in a form associated with Tzitzimime. Itzpapalotl is likely the Tzitzimime version of Ixnextli or Xochiquetzal after she picked the flower from the Tamoanchan. In Aztec Astronomy, Itzpapalotl is the modern constellation Orion and the stars Sirius and Procyon.
